As part of an external assessment of the Asthma Society’s communications strategy it was recommended that the website be redesigned. One of the criticisms of the site at the time was that the structure and content had evolved over the lifetime of the website and it had become increasingly difficult for users to navigate to specific content. Like many charities The Asthma Society of Ireland is facing government funding cutbacks and they were looking to their website to improve fundraising and donations and increase members.
What We Did
We first conducted staff, healthcare professional and patient interviews and workshops to get under the skin of the organisation and get to grips with the challenges it faces. These sessions and their findings helped us to understand how the website could make ASI staff more efficient and improve the user’s experience of the website.
User and Content Analysis
We identified the user personas and the content that was most sought after using previous site traffic data from Google Analytics. The website content was rewritten and was placed in a more user friendly site map and menu structure which would make more sense to a website user.
Website Wireframes and Design
Once we understood the technical requirements, the content and the functional priorities we began wireframing out the website layouts to create the template structure that would deliver a responsive layout. Our process is to always begin with the desktop layouts to engage the client with the complete design, which is structured such that tablet and mobile views can be achieved gracefully both from a design and development perspective. The design was inspired by the newly developed brand guidelines, which were translated for the web for the first time.
Our task was to first deliver the World Asthma Day Microsite using the new design and including and event calendar and website donations to support this very important day in the Asthma calendar.
The primary website features include;
- Responsive Design for Desktop, Tablet and Mobile including responsive Mega Menu
- Events Publishing and Booking
- Optimised site speed, based on block rather page refreshing
- Online Donations including Direct Debit Recurring Donations
- Online Shop, with custom shipping rules
- Site Membership including access to downloadable documents and shop discounts
- Salesforce Integration throughout the site to help build a contact database
- Creating a Webform to deliver an Asthma Control Test with published results.
- Related content throughout including Media Files, Documents, Articles and Events
The end result is a modern responsive Drupal built CMS website that has seen increased pages per visit, visit duration and a reduced bounce rate as against the old website. Membership numbers have increased by 30% since the website launch and there has been an increase in the number of event attendances and online donations.
The Asthma Society were very happy and Anne Kearney said "We have just completed work with Monsoon Consulting on a complete revamp of our website, asthma.ie, including a responsive design, online event registration linked to our database, and the addition of an online shop and donation functionality. The project brief was to deliver a more modern style website with better functionality and usability, and the final version has achieved the objectives we outlined in our original brief to the team. Since the revamp we have seen an increase in time spent on the site by visitors and we have received positive feedback from our members and site users.

They also provided advice on how to craft our message to ensure we were speaking to our audiences in a language they understood, helping to make the site more accessible. They recommended Drupal as a more simplified and flexible Content Management system. The project was delivered on budget despite a number of additions to the original technical specifications. Monsoon showed commitment to clean design and were always available to respond to any queries throughout the development process."
